Bill Clinton to LatAm bankers: engage the left

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hnTaxBLMfV_UKyG_lpFNYfrf8WIQD977ENQ00
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton urged the people who run Latin America's biggest development bank on Saturday not to turn their backs on the leftists in the region who parlayed the poor's discontent into electoral victories.
Clinton didn't name Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia, whose presidents have all demonized Washington and expelled U.S. diplomats in recent months, referring to them rather as "Colombia's neighbors."
He said he doesn't agree with their politics but "I do understand why poor people who feel powerless turn away from the messy world of democracy."

President Clinton Visits Latin America

President Clinton travels to Peru and Colombia to meet with people benefitting from health, education, and other programs launched by the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative
Building on his longstanding commitment to Latin America, President Bill Clinton traveled to Peru today to begin a tour of projects that have been launched by the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative (CGSGI), a project of the William J. Clinton Foundation, in Peru and Colombia. At the invitation of the national governments, CGSGI is working with local communities, the Carlos Slim Foundation, and several partners in the private sector to create jobs, increase incomes, and strengthen health, education, and the other building blocks of productivity - all in ways that can be locally sustained.
"This trip to Peru and Colombia gives me the opportunity to see the work of my Foundation in progress and talk to the people who are benefitting from our programs," President Clinton said. "From dozens of women who are running their own business in Colombia to thousands of people who now will receive cataract surgeries in Peru, we are helping people access the business support, health care, and education that will increase incomes, improve lives, and create sustainable development."
In Peru, President Clinton observed the launch of a project of CGSGI, the Ministry of Health, and the Carlos Slim Foundation that will deliver 50,000 additional cataract surgeries in Peru over the next four years, including the poorest regions of the country. Cataracts are a treatable yet are the leading cause of blindness in the developing world, and many thousands of people in Peru lack access to the affordable surgeries. By restoring the vision of 50,000 Peruvians over four years, this project will help increase the productivity of thousands of people and their families.
Tomorrow in Colombia, President Clinton will visit with Afro-Colombian businesswomen from the rural area of Quibdó who run an own organic spice business and, with CGSGI, are strengthening their business and developing new markets for their products. He also will visit a school launched in Barranquilla by Pies Diescalzos Foundation that is receiving support from CGSGI and providing nutrition and job training for thousands of disadvantaged youth and their families. These are examples of other projects launched by CGSGI in Latin America.
This visit marks the first time that President Clinton has traveled to Peru. While in Lima, he spoke to university students and officials at Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas about their role as global citizens in addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges.
About the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth InitiativeThe Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative is an innovative partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation, the private sector, governments, local communities, and other NGOs to increase the scope, scale, impact, and sustainability of social and economic development efforts in areas where poverty is widespread. Established in June 2007 by President Bill Clinton and Frank Giustra, CGSGI focuses on alleviating poverty in the developing world through market-driven development that creates jobs and increases incomes, and by strengthening factors that enable economic growth such as health and education. CGSGI is an effort to transform the way businesses do business in the developing world, by creating opportunities and models for all industries seeking to work responsibly in those regions. Statement from President Bill Clinton on the Passing of Dr. John Hope Franklin.

John Hope Franklin was one of the most important American historians of the 20th century and one of the people I most admired. I was honored he agreed to be the head of the President's Initiative on Race. He led his committee all over America to listen to people of all races, faiths, cultures, and classes. And he produced a remarkable report on the ways in which we remain divided along color lines and what we can do about it. During the process, we became friends and I learned a lot from him about history, politics, and life. He graced our country with his life, his scholarship, and his citizenship. Hillary and I will miss him very much. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

HRC BEING HONORED at a breakfast on MAY 18. Please hold the date for this unusual opportunity to spend time with her!
While First Lady, Hillary Clinton initiated a millennium project, SAVE AMERICA'S TREASURES, and took a very personal interest in the preservation and restoration of Val-Kill, Eleanor Roosevelt's home near Hyde Park. She has continued to be supportive of this wonderful project which is also a great example of economic stimulus for upstate.
A committee for the May 18 breakfast is now being formed - members will probably be asked to raise or donate $5000, $3000 or $1000. Please let me know if you would like to join me and be involved on this committee. It will be great fun, for a great purpose!
Individual tickets for the event will probably range from $200 to $350.

AIDS Clinics May Close

Below are excerpts from a Bill Clinton interview on Larry King, Feb 17, 2009

KING: Now, how is this economic crisis going to affect that and your other various things?

CLINTON: Well, so far, it has not had an adverse effect on the Global Initiative. It has had a very adverse effect on my health and economic development programs, and my climate change programs. Because after my library was built, where Americans were very generous to me at all levels, since then most of the contributions I get are 100 dollars or less, or a half a million or more. Millions and millions and millions of dollars disappeared from that upper category through no fault of their own.So I had saved some money for a little endowment, and I spent about half of it last year to keep all of our clinics open, and to keep most of our global warming work going, because I didn't want any children to die because of the economic downturn. But this year, I have got to go out and probably get another 200,000 or 300,000 people to give me 100 dollars or less, and then get more people to give money at the 500 to 1,000, 1,500 dollar category. And if I don't do it, I won't be able to continue my operations.KING: Do you think any giving might be hard?CLINTON: Well, no, ironically, here is what I think is going to happen. I think that most Americans know they're still better off than most people who ever lived. And a lot of people around the world feel that way. So they will continue to give some money, even if less. What I think is that almost every charitable endeavor will have to do what I'm doing, they'll have to restructure to be more like the recent presidential campaign. You know, in American modern history, the most Internet- intensive, small donor-dominated campaigns ever run, in order, were: first, President Obama's; second, Hillary's; third, Senator McCain."

Bill Clinton, in a statement to POLITICO, seemed to endorse this idea.“For 25 years, Al From has urged the Democratic Party to be the party of ideas and of ‘the dynamic center,’ rooted in the values of opportunity, responsibility and community,” Clinton said, adding, “Those ideas helped me win in 1992 and govern for eight years. ... By helping to modernize our government for the 21st century and cultivating young leaders with new ideas in every state, Al From has made invaluable contributions to the Democratic Party’s success and America’s future.”
