VIDEO Bill Clinton touts global citizenship in wide-ranging speech at UC Berkeley

Former President Bill Clinton urged UC Berkeley students Wednesday to practice "communitarianism" by helping improve the lives of impoverished people around the world.

Speaking in front of more than 2,000 students and university employees in Zellerbach Auditorium, the 42nd president talked about global citizenship in his first speech on the Berkeley campus since 2002.

Barely glancing at the notes in front of him, Clinton touched on a wide range of topics: health care, education, sanitation, energy and climate change. He spoke at length about the importance of nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, in changing the world.

Bill Clinton Major Garrett Interview

GARRETT: One other difference the president noted between the cycle in 1994, he's said to have said this to some democrats in the White House, never denied it. He said, a big difference between 1994 and now is you have me. What do you make of that?

CLINTON: Well, I don't know, but he's a persuasive man and I hope he helps. I think the main thing is they've got a lot of advanced notice and I think the -- if they really focus and catch a break or two, I don't think it'll be as bad as it was in '94

Bill Clinton Statement on the Passing of Representative John Murtha

Jack Murtha was a true patriot, a good man, and one of the most effective members of Congress. As the first Vietnam combat veteran elected to Congress, he became a champion for all men and women in uniform, and a respected voice in national defense. In 1996, I asked him to co-chair a U.S. delegation to ensure the fairness and openness of the first post-war election in Bosnia. At home, he worked hard to bring jobs, high tech industry, and quality health care to his own district in western Pennsylvania and to people in small towns all over America. I am grateful for his service, his friendship, and his steadfast support for Hillary and me. We loved him and we will miss him. Our prayers are with his wife Joyce, their children and grandchildren and the people of Pennsylvania he so proudly served for 36 years.

Bill Clinton Just arrived in Port-au-Prince

Flying into Port-au-Prince for the second time since the earthquake -- I was pleased to see continued signs of an expanding relief effort.

Today, I'll help my team deliver the emergency supplies we brought with us on our plane.

Donation by donation, it's the generosity of people like you that is keeping this relief effort going. And your continued dedication is what will make sure the Haitian people have the tools and supplies they need to rebuild.

I am so grateful that you have responded to this devastating crisis.

As you read this, work is underway to deliver meals, set up temporary shelters, and restore access to health services for earthquake survivors. I'm proud that today we were able to deliver laptops, generators, plastic sheeting, protein bars, and 1,900 lbs of medical supplies.

And it's not going to stop there.

Long after the television crews have gone and emergency response teams have returned to their home countries, I can promise you the Clinton Foundation will remain committed to Haiti's long-term rebuilding and recovery.

We will work with reputable organizations, the Haitian government, and most importantly the people of Haiti to ensure that they are empowered to create more opportunities for jobs, education, and health care than existed the day before this tragedy occurred.

There is a Haitian proverb, "Men anpil chay pa lou," which translates as "Many hands lighten the load."

It's going to take a lot of help and a long time, but I know that together you and I can lighten the load that the Haitian people have carried on their own for far too long.

Thank you for being part of that work with me today. I'll continue to be in touch as our work continues here in Port-au-Prince and beyond.

Bill Clinton

PS. Only with your continued generosity will we be able to sustain these efforts. Please make a donation of any size today:

Tourism is Seen as Way Back for Haiti

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the New York Times and others agree that building up Haiti's tourism infrastructure is a critical facet of long-term recovery plans for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Clinton, the United Nations' special envoy for Haiti, touted Haiti's tourism potential at a recent meeting of business leaders at the World Economic Forum, while the New York Times said in a Jan. 31 editorial that tourism could help boost Haiti's self-sufficiency by creating tens of thousands of jobs.
