Statement on the Death of Walter Cronkite
Statement on the Death of Walter Cronkite
July 18, 2009 New York, NY Bill Clinton Statements
Hillary and I are saddened by the loss of our friend Walter Cronkite. He was one of the most important figures in 20th century journalism, not just because he was the leading news anchor during tumultuous times when only three networks dominated television news, but because of the way he did it - with wise language, a fine mind, a caring heart, and a careful, fair-minded devotion to the facts of every story. He never let the established "story line" obscure the real story as he saw it. After he retired from broadcasting, he devoted himself to promoting those values within his beloved profession and in our larger public discourse. America has lost a great citizen and a profoundly good man.
