Video Update from President Clinton, Economic Empowerment, Keeping Kids Healthy, and more

GREETINGS FROM PRESIDENT CLINTON

I wanted to thank everyone for their support this past June as I took my eleventh trip to Africa to see the work of my Foundation in Malawi, Tanzania, and South Africa. I was heartened by the overwhelming response and am pleased to match the gifts of thousands of supporters. Together we are contributing $196,608 toward improving the lives of people in Africa and around the world.

I also wanted to send you this update on the progress we have made and the work that remains. You can start by checking out this video and reading our 2009 Annual Report. You can also learn how our projects promote economic empowerment, watch how to get involved in the fight against childhood obesity, and let us know why you support the Clinton Foundation -- we could feature your story in the next issue of our newsletter.

Thanks again for your enduring support.

Bill Clinton has always been in good relationships with the African American community

If Mr. Clinton was actually a racist or if anyone really believed it, beyond the partisan Obamaphile hacks, former Pres. Bill Clinton would never have recovered. But he has and for good reason. His roots belie the race-baiting lies of a partisan fight, which goes back decades to Bill Clinton’s foundation.

[...] From the start, Clinton also had an uncanny ability to forge a bond with African American voters. Judge L.T. Simes II understood why this was so:

Press Release: President Bill Clinton Recommits to Achieving Universal Access to AIDS Prevention and Treatment

Earlier today at the opening plenary session of the 18th Annual International AIDS Conference, President Bill Clinton applauded the world’s progress to date in fighting AIDS and recommitted to achieving universal access to AIDS prevention and treatment. In his speech to more than 25,000 conference attendees, President Clinton reminded the audience that while the global community’s progress has been great, now is not the time to walk away from fighting HIV/AIDS.

"We’ve ramped up and we’ve done a good job, but now we need to transition from an emergency response to something that is sustained," President Clinton said. "We cannot get to the end of this epidemic without profound changes to funding and the way we spend it. I will do my part."

Bill Clinton: The situation in Haiti today

This past Monday marked six months since a devastating earthquake shook the coast of Haiti. I wanted to give you, a supporter of the Clinton Foundation and our work, a brief update on where things stand. For the people of Haiti, each day since the earthquake is simply one more in the long process of rebuilding and reimagining their future. One step at a time, with the cooperation of the international community and through the generosity of individuals like you, they are reconstructing their country, their families, and their lives. Although recovery is not going as quickly as many of us involved in the process would like -- progress is being made. Despite the challenges, I remain committed to

By JEAN-MAX BELLERIVE and BILL CLINTON Finishing Haiti’s Unfinished Work

As the co-chair of the Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission, I know the scale and the urgency of needs on the ground in Haiti continue to be enormous. But I believe if we work in alignment with the priorities of Haiti’s development plan, with a sense of urgency, and in partnership with each other in the service of the people of Haiti, we can begin to give them more tools to build the future they envision for themselves, their children, and generations to come. -President Clinton

Clinton frustrated, hopeful about Haiti's slow recovery

In a phone interview with The Associated Press ahead of the six-month anniversary of the Jan. 12 quake, Clinton said international donors have given only 10 per cent of the aid they promised. He also noted the "enormous difficulty" plaguing rubble removal and construction of housing.

Clinton called the struggle to provide homes for the 1.6 million Haitians still living under tarps and tents "horribly frustrating."

"In the next couple of months we will start working through that at a more rapid pace and getting some of these other things going," Clinton said. "They have enormous potential."

Clinton is star of stars among Aspen's July 4 celebrants

President Bill Clinton -- here for the Aspen Institute's annual Ideas Festival -- was the star attraction and someone I ran into several times.

That included being seated at the table next to Clinton -- plus his luncheon guests Barbra Streisand and hubby James Brolin -- on Monday at the popular Ajax Tavern, at the foot of Aspen Mountain. Streisand barely said a word, listening intently as Clinton expounded professorially on a wide range of subjects -- from a desalination project for the Palestinian territories, to Mideast peace, to the future of the euro, to Social Security's survival -- to his pride at losing 25 pounds for daughter Chelsea's wedding.

President Bill Clinton's Photos - CGI members in Haiti

With the six-month anniversary of the January earthquake in Haiti approaching, the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) are continuing their long-term work on the ground. For example, CGI members responded to President Clinton's 2008 call to action with more than $100 million in Haiti-related commitments, and since the devastating January earthquake they have expanded their efforts. Last year, CGI launched a Haiti Action Network - a group of members that meets throughout the year to share ideas and generate action. The group has met regularly since last November, and 30 projects have been developed or enhanced as a result.

Bill Clinton explains how the ‘home team advantage’ of others can also end up working to our advantage

In fact, I think there are many of us who well could benefit from Clinton’s sage advice by realizing that our objective isn’t always to be seen as a winner, but to succeed at what we’re trying to accomplish -- even if it means letting others occasionally take the credit.
