Human Rights Day 2009: President Clinton Continues his Campaign for Equality through His Foundation
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrine this timeless truth for all people and all nations: respect for human rights is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace."
With these words, President Clinton proclaimed Human Rights Day in the United States on December 10, 1993, and built his Administration’s foreign policy on promoting democracy and human rights.
In addition to issuing an order to create an interagency working group to help enforce and ratify human rights treaties, the Clinton Administration established a genocide early warning center and funded nongovernmental organizations that responded rapidly to human rights emergencies. His leadership helped to end genocide in the Balkans and expand human rights and religious freedom worldwide, including in China, Burma, and Sudan
