Excerpts from Video: A Conversation with Secretaries Clinton and Panetta

SECRETARY CLINTON:I want to go back through to underscore something that Leon said, because between the two of us, we have many years, probably more than either of us care to admit, of experience in dealing with a lot of these issues. And Leon as the chair of the budget committee, as the director of OMB, as the chief of staff in the White House in the ’90s, was part of a process that got us to a balanced budget. This is not ancient history. We’re not talking about some time so far back we can’t remember it. The tough decisions were made in the ’90s to, yes, cut spending, yes, deal with some entitlement issues, and yes, increase revenues so that –
MR. SESNO: Raise taxes?
SECRETARY CLINTON: Yes. Absolutely, so that we had the kind of approach that got us on a trajectory, had we stayed on it, where we would not be facing a lot of these issues. And I will end where you started, Frank. I know how difficult this was for our country domestically over the last months. It’s always hard seeing the sausage being made. I happened to be in Hong Kong a few weeks ago, and I said confidently that we were going to resolve this; we were not going to default; we would make some kind of political compromise. entire video belowhttp://still4hill.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/video-cnns-conversation-with-secretaries-clinton-and-panetta/

My Dad's birthday wish Chelsea Clinton

Every year I try to find the perfect gift for my father's birthday -- one that truly captures what an inspiration he is to me and countless others. And, every year, it gets more difficult!

So this year, I'm working with his Foundation to do something a little different that will truly honor his 65th birthday and his many accomplishments along the way to this milestone.

We're collecting well wishes from thousands and combining them with the one thing I know he'll really want -- a commitment from each of us to work together to improve the lives of others.

So far, we've been getting an amazing response, and it's only with the support of individuals like you that he's been able to accomplish so much in the 10 years since he left office.

Thank you!

Chelsea Clinton

VIDEO Bill Clinton tours Haiti

Clinton said he had been "surprised and disturbed" to learn of the difficult loan terms available for even Haitian businesses with solid credit.

"One of the biggest problems in growing the Haitian economy is that there is really no facility that grants small business loans on reasonable terms," he said. Clinton launched a new business loan program in Haiti on Tuesday aimed at helping bolster an economy that was devastated by the January 2010 earthquake.

Bill Clinton Warns Against Further Cuts During Fragile Recovery

The 42nd president laid out the way he would reduce the deficit if he were sitting in the Oval Office. He would adopt a long-term approach to balancing the budget, with spending cuts and tax increases not kicking in until the country has "a little more economic growth."

"If we cut too much right now, there's a real chance, this may be counterintuitive, we could make the deficit even bigger because the revenues would drop even more than the spending would be cut," he said.

Kara Brandeisky of The New Republic outlines how Clinton handled his budget better than the current administration.

This isn't the first time America has been faced with a debt crisis. In 1995, then president Bill Clinton had a similar battle as Barack Obama — but he fought it differently. The big difference is that back then, Republicans backed down, whereas today they're on the verge of winning major policy concessions in exchange for a deal. How did President Bill Clinton head off this threat where Obama failed? But from the very beginning, Clinton would have none of it. "If they send me a budget that says simply, 'You take our cuts or we'll let the country go into default,' I will veto it," Clinton said at the time, calling Republican tactics "economic blackmail." Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin held the same firm line.

These cuts, without increased revenue to help those hurting in this still sick economy, are NAUSEATING. Decreased money for colleges, safety nets for states, research just to name a few, will get less funding. I am waiting for George W Bush to endorse Obama in the GOP primary! rant over
