Statement by President Bill Clinton on the Fifth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

"Tomorrow, five years will have passed since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Mississippi and Louisiana shorelines, taking the lives of over 1,800 people and causing more than $81 billion of damage. Although new challenges — from a tragic oil spill to a nationwide economic recession — have captured the headlines in the region, we have not forgotten those who lost their loved ones, their livelihoods, and their homes in the storm.

In five years, great progress has been made: metro New Orleans has recovered more than 90 percent of its population and 85 percent of its jobs. Musicians and artists are returning in droves. Infrastructure has been built stronger than ever before. Children are learning more in their schools. But there is still work to be done. People still need jobs, education and training, and the assurance that what happened five years ago will never happen again.

Big news on President Clinton's birthday

Amy,

I just received a message moments ago informing me that for President Clinton's birthday gift, a generous donor has offered to match your donations for the next 72 hours -- up to $50,000 -- to help President Clinton accomplish his ambitious wish list.

As President Clinton would tell you himself, this birthday gift is about something much greater than one person.

It's really about the lives of all the people around the globe that we'll be able to touch this year. Your donation is translated into meals, trees, expert advice -- the simple tools that can profoundly change the path of a person's life. And now your support will go twice as far.

Will you help contribute to President Clinton's wish list by Saturday, August 21, and double your impact?

Knowing how much this work and your support means to President Clinton, I would love to tell him before his birthday celebration this weekend that we reached our $50,000 matching goal. I know without a doubt that there's no birthday gift that would make him happier.

Statement by President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the Passing of Former Representative Dan Rostenkowski

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend Dan Rostenkowski. Dan was a great chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, whose ability to get things done in Congress was indispensable in balancing the budget, while investing more in better education and in getting our economy on the right course at the end of the 20th century. We were also glad to work closely with him on health care reform, welfare reform, and crime prevention. He was a tireless advocate for the people of Chicago and a true patriot who served our country well. Our thoughts and prayers are with LaVerne and their three daughters."

Clinton stressed the need to send Sestak to the Senate, touting the accomplishments of Democratic administrations, including his own eight tenure as President. He said Sestak's military career shows that he is a "problem solver," and said that Sestak would be a problem solver in the Senate.

Clinton's speech was also an indictment of what he termed "failed Republican" ideas. He noted that America turns to the Democrats in times of trouble. He cited as examples the election of Jimmy Carter in 1976, after the Watergate scandal; his election in 1992, in a time of recession; and Barack Obama's election in 2008, after the recession and banking collapse.

After his speech, Clinton worked the crowd, shaking hands, posing for pictures, and signing autographs. In addition to signing a number of books, Clinton signed a couple of baseballs, fliers

Bill Clinton wants your opinion

When I established my Foundation, I wanted to focus our work on the issues that I cared about most and where we could have the greatest impact: economic empowerment in the United States and in some of the poorest places on Earth; the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States; climate change around the world; health and education initiatives globally; and now, the reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Today, I want to hear from you about the issues you care about. Take the poll on my website about our work, see what issues are important to others, and then add your comments here on my Facebook page. -President Clinton

Bill Clinton: Donors still holding out on billion in pledges for Haiti reconstruction

Bill Clinton said Friday that international donors are still reluctant to make good on billions of dollars in pledges for Haiti's post-earthquake reconstruction.

Visiting a town where hundreds of thousands of homeless still live under tarps and tents, the former U.S. president told The Associated Press he hopes the presentation of $300 million worth of projects at the Aug. 17 meeting of the commission he co-chairs with Haiti's prime minister will help open their wallets.

"We're going for very specific projects at the next meeting and then we're going to make another run at 'em and see what happens," Clinton told AP during a two-day visit to the quake-ravaged country. "We just want to get the show on the road."
