In an exclusive video message delivered to delegates attending a COP15 meeting at Hamlet’s Kronborg Castle just outside Copenhagen on Saturday evening, ex-US president Bill Clinton said: “No matter what agreement is made in Copenhagen, the business leaders brought together by the Copenhagen Climate Council and the UN Global Compact are key to whether we can actually solve this crisis. There can be no effective response to the climate problem without business innovation, investment, and low-carbon technology and processes.”

The Clinton Health Access Initiative will carry on and expand the projects previously conducted through the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative and will continue working in association with governments and other NGO partners to expand access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS and malaria, and to strengthen integrated health systems around the world. President Clinton will continue to lead CHAI as the chairman of its board, and CHAI will continue to work alongside the Clinton Foundation.

With these words, President Clinton proclaimed Human Rights Day in the United States on December 10, 1993, and built his Administration’s foreign policy on promoting democracy and human rights.

In addition to issuing an order to create an interagency working group to help enforce and ratify human rights treaties, the Clinton Administration established a genocide early warning center and funded nongovernmental organizations that responded rapidly to human rights emergencies. His leadership helped to end genocide in the Balkans and expand human rights and religious freedom worldwide, including in China, Burma, and Sudan
